An EVVY Award is a prerequisite to the Outskirts Press Best Book of the Year Award and the equally coveted $1,500 Grand Prize. The Outskirts Press Best Book of the Year Award recognizes the best book published by Outskirts Press in 2013 as decided by our executives, our authors and the writing community.

Typically there are three finalists for the Best Book of the Year Award; however, this year we have made an exception to include all four of the first place EVVY Award winners in the Best Book of the Year Award contest. This week, we will be featuring each of the Best Book of the Year Award finalists on the Outskirts Press blog and voting will begin on Saturday, September 6th. You can learn more about each of the finalists through the links below and on the blog this week. Then be sure to visit the blog on Saturday to place your vote!

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT & SUCCESS STORY

“Thank you Outskirts for helping bring my book, The Road from Money, to life! Your help every step of the way has helped me accomplish the goal of having my first novel published. My plan is for this book to be the first of a three part series and I look forward to working you in the future. Thanks again.”

Sylvester Boyd Jr. is a native of Chicago, Illinois. At the age of fifteen, he and his family moved from Chicago’s south-side public housing projects to Allegan, Michigan where he later graduated in 1963 from Allegan High School. The Road from Money is his first novel and is based on the life of his Aunt Estella and stories told to him by family members over the years. He has woven both fact and fiction into a dynamic portrayal of historical events of the era including music, inventions and the journey of a young Negro girl and her family living under the trying times of Jim Crow in the South.

The Road from Money takes you on a journey to the small town of Money, Mississippi; just after the turn of the 20th century. It is the story of Estella Reynolds, a young Negro girl, growing up in America’s deep South. You follow her life as she faces racism, segregation, exploration, brutality and poverty. You watch as she finds the joy of family life, battles to get a good education, finds her first love and above all tries to figure out why things are the way they are. You enter a time after World War I and before the start of World War II. A time when automobiles were new and planes had just taken to the sky. The story is set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the Great Dust Bowl, a flood, Prohibition; and a time when Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt were President. The story also highlights the strengths of a people and many of America’s weaknesses.
- Sylvester Boyd, Jr., author of The Road From Money
